Romeo and Juliet is a 1996 American romantic drama film directed by Baz Luhrmann and adapted from the eponymous play. The modern adaptation consists of a prologue, three acts, a prelude, and an epilogue. The film opens with the quote "All the world's a stage" written by William Shakespeare in his First Folio of 1623. There are no visual cues as to where this scene is taking place; it seems to exist within another time period or universe even though there are cars driving around it. The prologue to Romeo + Juliet depicts the streets of Verona, Italy. A group of excited children run through the streets until they stop at a pair of statues. Romeo, a young Montague, is among them. As he looks upon the statue of his ancestor, he vows to give its counterpart, Juliet's statue should ever meet her, his name "with love". The children leave as an adult Romeo returns. Approaching the statue he meets a woman named Tybalt who is revealed to be his cousin that same night at an elaborate ball celebrating several victories for then-recently deceased Prince Escalus. Meanwhile, Juliet returns to her house with her nurse. They are unaware that Romeo has come late to the party and they are unable to find him. Juliet then spots Romeo talking with his cousin, whom he has invited into the house after seeing her on the street earlier. She takes this opportunity to ask him why he would give his name to a statue when he could have it in real life. Rather than answer she begins dancing with one of the relatives. When Juliet asks who they are waiting for, Romeo replies that they are waiting for Tybalt, who arrives late as well after being chased off by an enraged Mercutio for wreaking havoc at his own birthday party. Juliet discloses her identity to Romeo and begs him to leave before they are caught together. Romeo refuses and says that he will only leave when his friend Mercutio arrives. When Mercutio arrives, Tybalt challenges him to a duel, but is stopped by the Prince, who is now present at the party. He is enraged at their presence at Verona's most important celebration due to the ongoing feud between the families. The Prince banishes Romeo from Verona. The following morning, Juliet wakes up early and immediately goes to find Romeo in his hiding spot on the city walls. With his help she climbs out of the city and meets up with Mercutio, who treats them to a picnic in the woods near Verona. Juliet later comes across her nurse talking with Tybalt. She tells her nurse that she should go to Romeo and tell him about their relationship. The nurse, fearful for Juliet's life after hearing Tybalt's harsh words toward her, decides not to go through with it. Tybalt then sets upon Mercutio, who is struck down by Romeo's sword before being struck by it himself. Later that night Juliet attends Mercutio's funeral while Romeo watches from above ledge on the city walls where he has been imprisoned since their escape from Verona. cfa1e77820
